Arctic Adaptation
Global tides have shifted priorities in the Arctic: funding for research, the role of defense, and trade relationships have changed due to geopolitics while climate change continues to alter the physical and biological systems of the North at an alarming rate.
How must businesses change their plans? How do communities adapt to hazards? How do the people of the North adapt to face these challenges? And conversely, how can the world adapt to the ways and values of the Arctic?
The program will explore many issues and see how we can, in the Arctic, adapt across all our differences for a common goal.
Meet our Emerging Leaders of 2026

2026 Program Recap
The group of 30 young professionals from 11 nationalities and 4 different Indigenous groups met first at the Salmon Centre in Bodø with 5 mentors.
During their time in the city, the group visited the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Norwegian Aviation museum. They met with representatives from Nord University and the Norwegian Armed Forces to imagine various scenarios for the Arctic from geopolitical upheaval to a global green transition.
They took a boat and faced the waves to cross the Vestfjord before arriving in Svolvær. They then stayed in the cozy hamlet of Kabelvåg for two days – enjoying snowshoeing to see the low light of the sun returning after polar night, warm saunas and workshops focused on the future of different industries in the North.
They also took a bus trip to the Lofotr museum to learn about the ancient Viking history in the region and discuss the challenges of tourism in a region characterized by small town.
Back in Svolvær, the group worked on their videos (see below) and boarded the Norwegian Coastal Steamer, Hurtigruten. Onboard, they slept, ate and filmed their Brief Outlook videos before arriving in Tromsø.
In Tromsø, the group joined the Arctic Frontiers 2026 conference – Turn of the Tide, where they presented posters, gave scientific talks, participated in panels, and spoke in recorded segments. They also held the annual Emerging Leaders Reception which reunited alumni from the program as well.
2026 Brief Outlooks
These are short videos produced by the Emerging Leaders 2026 participants. They develop the script and must come to a consensus on their messages. The videos are shown during the Big Picture sessions at the Arctic Frontiers conference.
In these videos, the Emerging Leaders call for action to safeguard Arctic coastal communities, to build up local infrastructure and to invest in local economies.
These were filmed by William Jakobsen.
